Win A Copy of WordPress For Dummies

Over the next five days I’m going to run a little daily competition here at ProBlogger. The prize - each day from Monday through to Friday I’ll be giving away an autographed copy of WordPress For Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson. I’ve seen some parts of this book already (the full thing is winging it’s way from the US as I write this) and it’s a great read and well worthwhile the purchase for those starting out with and wanting to extend their knowledge of a blog platform that more ProBlogger readers use than any other.

A recent survey here at ProBlogger showed that 9.4% of you have been blogging for more than 4 years and that almost 25% of you have been blogging for more than 2 years. So there are some experienced bloggers in our midst who can remember ‘the good old days of blogging’. Here’s my question to those bloggers.

Here’s a quick tip on ad placement that I’d like to pass onto bloggers - particularly those experimenting with AdSense. Ensure that your content can be seen above the fold. That is - ensure it’s above the fold if you want readers to keep coming back to your blog. One of the important choices that faces many bloggers is how to place Ads aggressively enough to get click-throughs but subtly enough that the rest of the page doesn’t suffer as a result.

We take survey at ProBlogger

Some tips from Problogger

Hugh McLeod writes: “So that’s why I have a blog, I suppose. I like the control. I write something, I post it, it gets read, hopefully good things happen as a result, somewhere on this small blue planet of ours. Unlike a book or a movie or a TV commercial, there’s no waiting around for somebody else to greenlight it. The only light is the greenlight….

Just a short note to let those readers who have emailed to ask how our house moving has gone that we’re in our new home successfully. Yesterday (the day we had to be out of our old place and in our new one) was a long day (I started carrying boxes at 7am and stopped carrying them at 9pm) and I’m tired, bruised (you should see the purple bruise on my arm which I dropped a couch on) and battered - but we finally made it (despite some lawyers delaying settlement on our new place for 4 hours and costing us a small fortune in ‘waiting fees’ from our removalist (I’ve never seen anyone earn so much money for sitting in a truck smoking).

The following post on Unhealthy Eating Habits of Unproductive Bloggers is from Lea Woodward who will be contributing a monthly post here at Problogger on Healthy Blogging. You can read more about Lea below. You’ve just got up, put the coffee on and are sitting bleary-eyed in front of your computer. Feeling productive? Full of energy? Ready to write that killer blog post that’s just screaming to get out? Nope - me neither…and I don’t even drink coffee so I can’t use that to perk me up and get me going.

Hi all â€" Skellie here. Our first foray into Community Consulting 2.0 has wrapped up. With 65+ insights shared, it’s time to summarize the main recommendations given into an actionable plan for Kathleen’s blog, Fashion-Incubator. If you’re new to the project, you might want to read the Community Consulting launch post and take a look at the post where Fashion-Incubator was opened for critique. Every inch of the blog was pored over and evaluated, which has helped build a comprehensive body of tips and lessons we can all learn from.

This week I’ve had emails from quite a few new readers asking questions that I probably take for granted that everyone knows. So if you’re new - let me share a few tips to help you get the most out of this blog. If you’re an old timer - you might like to skip this post: What is ProBlogger? This is a blog dedicated to teaching bloggers (and those wanting to start one) how to start and improve their blogs. The blog covers a lot of the basics of blogging - but has a particular interest in helping bloggers to make money blogging.

I did an interesting calculation today. I worked out that I’d written 107 posts at my own blog, plus 36 posts at other blogs, for a total of 143 (mostly) long posts, produced across four months. The maths proves that I’m a prolific blogger. Certainly not the most prolific, but I suspect that I write more than most. That doesn’t necessarily mean I spend a lot of time writing posts. In truth, I’ve always been surprised by the amount of time I spend vs. the number of posts I produce.
